Oricon - Yearly Singles Ranking 2008 Yearly Ranking: Arashi monopolizes 1st and 2nd spots for the first time in 19 years
Oricon announced its 41st Oricon Yearly Ranking 2008 (data collection period: 12/24/2007 to 12/15/2008) on the 11th. Arashi, who has monopolized the first and second spots in the category for singles sales for the first time in 19 years, was represented by members Ohno Satoshi and Sakurai Sho. Sakurai, who accepted the trophy, smiled and gave the follow comment of gratitude to their fans: "This (trophy) is the first time I've felt like we're getting close. It truly feels like we've received a prestigious award."
In this year's ranking for singles sales, with "Truth/Kaze no Mukou e" (618,000 copies sold, released on 08/20/20008) taking the 1st place and "One Love" (524,000 copies sold, released on 06/25/2008) taking the 2nd place, Arashi has monopolized the top two spots. They have taken the first spot on the yearly singles ranking for the first time since their debut eleven years ago in November of 1999. Monopolizing the top two spots is a first in 19 years since Princess Princess in 1989 with "Diamonds" and "Sekai de Ichiban Atsui Natsu". Following Miya Shiro to Pinkara Trio (1973), Pink Ladies (1978), Hikaru GENJI (1988) and Puripuri, they have become the 5th artist in history to achieve this.
With "Truth" as the theme song to his own first featured drama, Ohno commented with delight: "It's truly all thanks to our fans. 'Truth' is a song with a feel that Arashi has never had until now, so I am extremely happy." Moreover, with "Kaze no Mukou e" as NTV's theme song for the Beijing Olympics, as someone who has personally served there as a local reporter, Sakurai looked back with a smile: "I was extremely happy to hear from the athletes that they listen to Arashi's songs too."
In addition, Arashi's latest single "Beautiful days" (422,000 copies sold, released on 11/05/2008) has taken the 10th place in the ranking. Having the same artist rank in with three releases in the top ten ranking for yearly singles sales is the first time in 6 years since Utada Hikaru (3 releases) in 2002; as a male artist, it is a first in 20 years since Hikaru Genji (4 releases) in 1988. Adding together the individual sales for each single, they have also topped the ranking for overall singles sales by an artist (25.8 billion yen) to become crowned twice amongst the singles rankings of 2008.

ALSO, NEWS FROM TOKYOGRAPH: EXILE may have owned this year's sale rankings, BUT!!!
However, EXILE had no entries in the Top 10 Singles of the year. Instead, Arashi was the big winner with three of their songs making the list. They took the top two spots with "truth / Kaze no Mukou e" (618,000 copies) and "One Love" (524,000), while "Beautiful days" was #10 (422,000). Arashi is only the 5th artist to have the top two singles in a year, with the last one being Princess Princess in 1989.
